What is a Business/Executive Coach?

Business Coaching is a resource that is being utilised increasingly across all industries from business owner and CEO to high potential graduate.

Recently the world’s wealthiest person, Jeff Bezos, spoke about his Business Coach helping him improve his communication with Amazon staff; Steve Bennett the software entrepreneur once stated that having a Business Coach was vital for career development; Barak Obama and Oprah Winfrey amongst others also report to have used Business Coaches consistently in order to enhance their careers.

So what is Coaching and why is it the secret weapon that the most successful people on the planet use?

Well first of all let me tell you what Coaching isn’t. I have found many people use the terms “Coaching” and “Mentoring” interchangeably however, they have two very different functions and processes.

mentor is an expert in the field of the inexperienced mentee and is typically from the same workplace and will typically provide networking assistance and career guidance within their industry. This is not the same as a Business Coach.

A Business Coach is not expected to be an expert in the field of the Coachee and doesn’t need to be. A Business Coach will provide subjective guidance on particular topics and areas of interest to the Coachee.

What to expect from a Business Coach:

No power play

The Coaching relationship is not one with supervisor-subordinate roles. The Coach provides non-judgmental support and subjective guidance on topics relevant for the client on a level status.

Complete Confidentiality

The most effective Coaching experience is one that doesn’t give any feedback from sessions to the Coachee’s organisation. The conversations held during a Business Coaching session will never leave the room, which means it is safe space to talk about You completely honestly without any kind of repercussion.

Bespoke and tailored sessions

A good Business Coach understands that each individual is exactly that, an individual! This means that your take on the world is completely unique and your life and work experiences are completely unique. All of this will be taken into consideration to tailor sessions and development work to help you specifically.

You are the client, not your organisation

A Business Coach sees the Coachee as the client; the time spent together is without an Organisation’s objective. This means that you can talk freely without fear of repercussion and without being subject to an organisation’s designs.

A personal soundboard

A Coach provides you with an active listening soundboard that isn’t your manager, isn’t your co-worker, isn’t a relative or a partner. Having access to this kind of soundboard can be a very powerful experience.

Accountability

Goal setting is a skill and studies show that Business Coaches work effectively at helping people accomplish business goals more efficiently.

Building Resilience

Evidence has shown that Business Coaching increases the Resilience of Coachees and has consequential positive impacts on workplace well-being and workplace relationships.

If you are ready to make steps towards your career goals then maybe a Business Coach could be the answer.
